Humans in the United States are not unlike other inhabitants of the world, all of us are by nature somewhat selfish, and predisposed to all sorts of ugliness in our behavior. Wise people recognize this innate condition of human depravity and try personally to be better than purely human instincts and desires dictate, and also to do what they can to influence the community at large to follow suit.
This experiment (USA) in liberty is over 236 years and counting. My personal awareness of more weighty matters like personal morality, freedom, liberty, and justice would be about 50 years of those 236. I was born in the summer of 1945 but for all practical purposes I was brain dead for the first several years of my life as most kids, especially boys, are. My young life consisted of eating, sleeping, and in the hours between those activities I slipped in and out of reality trying to lean to live my life and slowly, very slowly, learn what life is all about.
I learned from my morally from upstanding parents what sin(s) is. Lying, stealing, cheating, “talking back” to either parent, but especially to my mother, were all sins that required retribution in the form of a belt to my back side and the knowledge I had offended God. As I grew older I also learned that “good people” don’t get drunk, have sex with anyone they aren’t married to, and don’t cheat on their income taxes.
During my 5 years of high school (I did one year of post graduate work in high school) I only knew of two girls who got pregnant as high school students. Those stories were conveyed in hushed tones because it seemed that everyone knew as I did that such a thing was very wrong. When I entered high school in 1959 I seldom heard of a divorce because one partner had an affair. By the time I graduated, affairs were becoming quite popular. The 60’s was already living up to the reputation it would eventually earn.
Sin and sinners were always obvious, but they were still looked upon with disapproval by “most” of the people who lived in my small world. College girls did not shack up with their college boy friends and had they, they would have been labeled “loose” or a “slut”. Nobody on the planet so far as I can remember thought drunks and dope addicts had a disease, (some of us still don’t).
As the odometer kept rolling over and the years piled up things rapidly started to change. Those young hippie types who preferred VW buses for transportation had started to mature and many of the more affluent became college and university professors. Each had a brain effected in some measure by years of substance abuse, and a history of living to please every desire of the human flesh. Now they started to churn out young mindless wonders by the thousands who were indoctrinated into the “new morality”. Some of the chosen fields of endeavor were journalism and social work. They wanted to “change the world”, and they did!
The children of those 60’s radicals were even more amoral in many cases than their godless parents and the spiral downward through breeding has continued. The life I remember where even the town drunk believed the Bible is inspired and was every word true is only a distant memory. Now, even many of the men and women who are training the next generation of pastors, theologians, and thinkers are some of the biggest critics of the Bible and the morality it reveals.
in 2013 if you dare say in public what the Bible says about any number of sins, but especially homosexual behavior, at once you are branded as “Homophobic”, mean spirited, ignorant, and intolerant. Church folks send their daughters away to college with a prescription for birth control pills fully expecting that they will need them, and then go carelessly along their merry way watching women as goofy as them on TV several hours a day.
In our churches, preaching against sin isn’t nearly as popular as it once was. People largely prefer 20 minute positive thinking devotionals with clever titles and slide presentations to Bible teaching. So….the pews are populated with people who are gladly accepted as “Christians” yet they are addicted to prescription meds in an alarming number, drink much more than the word moderation would describe, and divorce at almost exactly the same rate as their heathen neighbors.
No one so far as I can tell is calling for immorality in the populace. What is required to “fit in” in this modern culture is that you become “amoral”. Not good moral standards, not bad moral standards, but rather NO moral standards is what our culture in 2013 demands.
I have decided to “just say NO”. What the Bible says was wrong 5 or 6, or 2 thousand years ago is still wrong. There would be no moral code, no basis for law, except for God and His book, the Bible. My time is winding down but my hope is that in the days I have left to live I will honor my parents and my God by giving heed to the good morality I have been taught.
The late J Vernon McGee once said, “I used to say this generation is going to the dogs. But I quit saying that, out of respect for the dogs“. I concur.
