Evidently most liberal politicians and their gushing followers think one-size-fits-all in regard to public policy. One mental case shoots up a school killing 26 innocents and millions of people quickly assume that something similar is about to happen in every school in America so something has to be done. Then instead of focusing on the real problem, mental illness and things in our society that influence young men toward violence, everyone hops on the gun control band wagon.
Almost every time a person, or a group of persons, make a decision based on their emotions they tend toward outcomes that are meaningless. I remember as a young boy going to the theater in Asheville, N.C. to watch a scary movie. At some point in the movie my emotions were screaming to me that I was personally in grave danger and could be killed or seriously injured at any moment. The truth was my only exposure to any sort of danger was eating too much candy and buttery pop corn. I don’t doubt the sincerity of many people who are on board to support new gun control laws, but in almost every case it is a purely an emotional choice. The facts do not support their rationale.
I am not one of those who lives in daily dread that soon men dressed in black will swarm my house and take my guns. Nor do I fear imminent danger of the 2nd Amendment being abolished. I am probably less armed than any of my neighbors. My three weapons have not been fired in many years and have more sentimental value than actual utility. I don’t ever expect to need to fire one to protect my property or our lives. That being said, I, as an American citizen, have a right to own property, including guns. I don’t cater much to anyone who thinks otherwise. If you don’t like guns don’t own one and don’t hang with people who do. Just don’t get on my case because I do.
If I believed that banning so-called “assault weapons”, or magazines that hold numerous rounds of ammo, would stop evil, and or, mentally unbalanced people from hurting and killing with guns I would be all for it. The sad but true fact is that banning certain guns and related items will not stop it or even curtail the numbers. Criminals and people with impaired mental abilities have total disregard for the laws of the country. Law abiding citizens are not a problem but are the only ones who would obey any new law and would be hurt by such a law (loosing their right to own guns..). This sort of logic totally escapes those who make decisions on an emotional basis. So, V.P. Joe Biden will talk to lots of people who are all in a wad emotionally and a very few who oppose gun regs and are opposed based on the United States Constitution and plain logic.
In another post I mentioned what a tiny fraction of guns in America are ever used in any crime and the minuscule percentage of malcontents who commit mass murder using guns. Your child is far more likely to be injured riding his bike or riding in your car than being shot at school or the theater.
In the next few months there will be a showdown in the congress. I seriously doubt there will be the votes to pass new gun control legislation. But, our President might act by Presidential fiat, he has done it before. He prefers his own will every time over the will of the people.
Thinking is fast becoming a thing of the past. It’s good for you, try it sometime.
